Earlier this week, Steel Wool Studios announced that Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic is set to launch on June 13th for both PS5 and PC. However, there are whispers of uncertainty in the air as the studio quietly omitted any mention of PSVR 2 support, leaving many fans puzzled.
Originally, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic made its first significant splash at PAX West 2024, where it was showcased as a playable demo for the PSVR 2. At that point, it seemed poised to be a hybrid experience, combining both virtual reality and traditional screen-based gameplay, crafted by the skilled XR team at the studio.
Since its founding in 2012, Steel Wool Studios has carved out a name for itself in the VR gaming sphere, backed by a substantial $5 million investment from HTC in 2016. Their portfolio includes notable VR titles like Hello Neighbor Search and Rescue (2023), FNAF: Help Wanted (2019), and its sequel FNAF: Help Wanted 2 (2024).
Yet, while announcing the release date for the latest installment of FNAF, the studio conspicuously erased any PSVR 2 support references from all their promotional content. This even extends to the game’s PlayStation Store page, which, according to web archives, once hinted at optional PSVR 2 capabilities. It’s clear that somewhere along the line, plans have shifted.
The only notable mention of PSVR 2 was in an official PlayStation announcement made on February 12th, coinciding with the game’s release date news; however, that post has since disappeared.
Steel Wool Studios has remained tight-lipped on their plans regarding PSVR 2 support. Furthermore, questions linger about whether the upcoming PC versions—heading to the Epic Games Store and Steam—will feature optional VR enhancements.
We’ve reached out to Steel Wool Studios for clarification, but so far, no word has come back. Rest assured, we’ll update you as soon as we learn more, and whether this points to a delayed VR release or some other kind of strategic decision.
