Sometimes, a mod becomes so legendary and beloved that it evolves into its own unique creation. Just think of PUBG and DayZ, which both emerged from the adaptable universe of Arma, or how The Forgotten City came to life from the world of Skyrim. Now, we have Total Chaos, a chilling horror FPS that resembles an Unreal Engine 5 reimagining of an epic Doom 2 mod. This new venture, crafted by a team that includes the original mod creator, brings a mix of Silent Hill-style frights and survival elements reminiscent of Stalker. Excitingly, along with a fresh demo for Steam Next Fest, they’ve finally pinned down a release date for later this year.
Initially unveiled in 2018 as a transformative mod for Doom 2, Total Chaos has now emerged as a standalone game. It paints a picture that is both haunting and atmospheric, drawing you into the eerie remnants of Fort Oasis—a once prosperous mining town now shrouded in corruption and darkness. Guided only by a crackly, enigmatic voice on your radio, you’re propelled into the depths of its mines and surrounding structures to unravel its mysteries.
Even though it traces its roots to Doom, this isn’t your typical heart-pounding, frenetic boomer shooter. Yes, it’s a first-person shooter, but here, weapons and ammo are luxuries. As you navigate through Fort Oasis, melee combat becomes your frequent ally. Resourcefulness is key—makeshift weapons can be crafted from scattered debris—but you’re limited by an inventory weight system, meaning you can’t lug around an entire arsenal or hoard materials.
For those looking to dive even deeper into its creepy settings and confront its nightmarish creatures face-to-face, a VR version will debut simultaneously. Originally, Total Chaos was slated for a vague 2025 release, but that’s now more defined. Both the game and its VR counterpart are set to launch on Steam on Thursday, July 24.
Trigger Happy Interactive, the developer, has also announced plans for a post-launch paid DLC dubbed “Epilogue.” This expansion will introduce “an extended narrative, unexplored locations, and a brand-new tenth chapter.”
Eager to try it out before July? You’re in luck! A newly enhanced demo is available as part of Steam Next Fest, letting you experience Total Chaos right now until Monday, March 3.
