As the office lights dimmed and the bottles of champagne popped, fans of the classic Elder Scrolls series—my colleagues included—were deep in celebration over the surprise release of The Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remake. But for those of us more inclined to gaze into the future, there was a small but significant sliver of hope: Todd Howard took a moment to reassure us that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still very much in development. Boldly, he confirmed that the team is hard at work on it.
Just before showering us with exciting news and sneak peeks about the Oblivion Remaster, Howard offered a brief but thrilling nugget of information: “Obviously, we’re working on the 6th chapter here.”
And there we have it—arguably the biggest revelation regarding The Elder Scrolls 6 since back in March 2024 when Bethesda started allowing testers to tinker with early builds. They even teased us with claims about the game’s fun factor, which, let’s face it, is pretty crucial.
Before this recent update, we were practically starved for news. Last October, a former Skyrim designer told us not to expect any updates on ES6 until a mere six months before its release. Just a month prior, Phil Spencer had cheerily speculated that ES6 was around five years away. That guess felt more like wishful thinking at the time, but as two years have passed with little more to go on, the humor has worn a bit thin.
Concrete updates from Bethesda? Well, let’s just say we’ve heard crickets. As of August 2023, they did confirm that development had kicked off, despite five years having passed since its grand announcement at E3. Call me crazy, but don’t you think that perhaps they might have jumped the gun on revealing the game so early?
Jokes and sarcasm aside, it’s heartening to see any flicker of life from Elder Scrolls 6. It feels like an eternity since its announcement; back then, I was still at school, and now here I am—juggling adult responsibilities like bills and navigating the dating app scene. Bethesda undeniably remains a powerhouse in the realm of first-person RPGs, and I’ve no doubt they’ll deliver something spectacular. But come on, Bethesda, throw us a bone—just a piece of concept art would be amazing. After all, Liam Neeson had way more evidence of his daughter’s existence in “Taken” than we have for this game.
So, tell us in the comments—are you still feeling hopeful, or has the wait taken its toll? And, on a lighter note, any predictions on how much student loan debt I’ll rack up by the time Elder Scrolls 6 finally drops?
