Disney has finally given us a glimpse of Stitch in their live-action remake of Lilo and Stitch, though it might leave viewers feeling a tad uneasy.
Just recently, we got a trailer for another beloved animated film being transformed into a live-action venture—How to Train Your Dragon. Now, Disney has jumped on the bandwagon with their own reveal. The company rolled out a brief 30-second teaser yesterday. In it, Stitch takes on a playful Godzilla role, stomping on a sandcastle that suspiciously resembles the iconic Disney castle. There’s also a handful of ordinary sandcastles meeting their demise. Apart from a quick scene at the end where a CGI Stitch is awkwardly added into a void alongside the release date (which you’ll want to mark as May 23, 2025), there’s not much else to see. Talk about a minimal first teaser!
For those wondering about the film’s storyline, the official synopsis doesn’t stray from the original. It highlights the heartfelt bond that forms between Lilo, a lonely human girl, and Stitch, her alien companion created to be a force of havoc. Chris Sanders returns to voice Stitch, while the directorial reins have been handed to Dean Fleischer Camp, known for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.
The casting lineup introduces Maia Kealoha, who will step into Lilo’s shoes for the first time. Sydney Agudong of On My Block fame is cast as Lilo’s older sister, Nani. Fans of The Hangover will recognize Zach Galifianakis lending his voice to Jumba, alongside Billy Magnussen from Game Night voicing Pleakley. And rounding off the cast, Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso joins in an undisclosed role, though it wouldn’t be a stretch to guess she might portray the Grand Councilwoman.
With the release date inching closer, it’s likely a full trailer will drop soon enough. Meanwhile, Disney is already gearing up for a busy holiday season, with Moana 2 hitting theaters this week. So, get ready as they prepare to rake in plenty of moviegoer excitement—and cash.
