Last month, Another Axiom, the creative minds behind Gorilla Tag, unveiled their latest venture, Orion Drift. Now, players are in for a treat as the game is set to receive its first major update, introducing an exciting mini-game known as ‘Capture the Beacon’ (CTB).
Drawing inspiration from the classic capture the flag games, CTB challenges players to maneuver a rod-shaped beacon back to their team’s base. What’s different here is that Orion Drift welcomes anyone to join at any moment, avoiding player caps and time constraints, which keeps the action lively.
While the studio is keeping some details under wraps, they promise there’s plenty more to this update. We’re on the edge of our seats to see what else this release holds when it goes live tomorrow, March 28th, at 10 AM PT.
Debuting in late February as a free early access game on Quest, Orion Drift cleverly adopts Gorilla Tag’s unique way of moving. Players energetically pump their arms to navigate the vast space station, offering a physical and engaging experience.
Aside from the newly announced CTB, Orion Drift features a variety of activities. A standout is the flagship game ‘Drift Ball,’ which pays homage to the now-retired Echo VR, offering a fresh take on low-gravity handball.
The station is packed with options: exercise your climbing skills in parkour challenges, sharpen your Drift Ball techniques in practice zones, or enjoy a round of golf or basketball. Not to forget, there are lounges where you can cheer on matches taking place in different arenas.
Currently, the game can host up to 75 players per server. However, Another Axiom aims to ramp this up to 200 in the future. Expanding its roster of mini-games seems like a move towards making this ambition a reality, though it’s still early days for Orion Drift.
Despite mirroring Gorilla Tag’s engaging social game model, Orion Drift hasn’t quite achieved the viral buzz of its predecessor. As it stands, the game has accumulated about 3,300 user reviews and hasn’t yet cracked the top 50 Quest games, with titles like Animal Company, Yeeps, and Gorilla Tag leading the charts.
