Last year, an exciting announcement shook the world of tabletop games. Wizards of the Coast joined forces with Resolution Games to bring Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), a beloved role-playing classic, into the realm of virtual reality. This news had fans buzzing with anticipation.
For months, the project details were shrouded in mystery. All that changed on Wednesday, when the companies finally lifted the veil, revealing the game’s official title and some tantalizing tidbits. These reveals marked a significant milestone, ushering players closer to a whole new way to experience D&D.
The upcoming game is named Battlemarked. It builds upon the foundation set by Resolution Games’ Demeo system, bringing the traditional tabletop feel into a virtual space. Much like D&D, it features turn-based combat, but it stands out with an innovative action point system involving playing cards.
Battlemarked marks the first-ever collaboration between Resolution Games and Wizards of the Coast. Fans can expect a more authentic D&D experience compared to Demeo. However, there’s a unique twist: Battlemarked doesn’t need a Dungeon Master (DM). This design choice encourages players to dive deeper into strategy and decision-making, putting roleplaying on the sidelines for a refreshing change.
At the outset, Battlemarked will launch with two narrative-rich campaigns designed for up to four players, promising engaging adventures right out of the gate.
Gamers will be pleased to hear that Battlemarked will hit multiple platforms. While a definitive list of compatible devices hasn’t been provided, the game is likely to follow the footsteps of Demeo, which is available on a range of platforms like Meta Quest, Pico, SteamVR, PlayStation VR2, PlayStation 5, PC, Mac, and iPad.
To add to the excitement, a new trailer was released alongside the announcement. It beautifully showcases the signature art style from Wizards of the Coast that fans adore, revealing some of the characters we can expect, such as a Dragonborn fighter and a Tiefling rogue, among others.
Yet, much remains unknown about Battlemarked. Details such as its launch date, pricing, and even the intricacies of its campaigns are still under wraps. While Resolution Games declined to answer our questions, they did promise more campaigns in various D&D settings in the future.
Resolution Games, headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, has been crafting games for ten years now. Their portfolio is diverse, featuring titles like Angry Birds: Isle of Pigs, Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale, and Spatial Ops. The company has raised approximately $38.6 million to date, according to PitchBook.
Today’s announcement highlights an ongoing trend: D&D’s steady rise in mainstream culture. It’s no longer just a game but a thriving multimedia franchise. Fans can enjoy web series like Critical Role and Dimension 20, immerse themselves in video games such as Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3, or catch the cinematic release “Honor Among Thieves.”
