Developer BioWare has recently seen its team shrink to fewer than 100 employees. According to a Bloomberg report, the studio’s workforce has been reduced by over half in the past couple of years. At one point, BioWare had more than 200 employees.
This significant reduction in staff is partly due to last week’s announcement of layoffs as the company streamlines its operations to concentrate on the upcoming installment of the Mass Effect series. Among those affected by this strategic pivot are writer Trick Weekes and producer Jenn Cheverie.
Additionally, BioWare has been transitioning some employees to other studios within Electronic Arts. Originally, many believed these transfers to be short-term assignments, but they seem to have turned into more permanent roles.
In a message shared with the team, BioWare general manager Gary McKay explained, “At this stage of development, the entire studio’s resources aren’t necessary.” He added, “We are fortunate to have an incredible pool of talent here at BioWare. Over recent months, we have made a concerted effort to align many of our colleagues with open positions across EA where their skills are an excellent match.”
