Rec Room, a vibrant social VR platform, has long been a hub for community-driven adventures, allowing friends and random players alike to dive into its engaging experiences. One of the latest attractions that’s turning heads is ‘Run the Block,’ a game that draws inspiration from the beloved Dreamcast classic, Jet Set Radio from 2000.
‘Run the Block’ hit the virtual shelves on December 11th and has already seen an impressive influx of over a million players. Much like Jet Set Radio, this exhilarating mini-game throws you into the mix with up to nine others, challenging you to race and parkour your way through an urban landscape with flair and agility.
Though you won’t find the game’s iconic 2000s rollerblades here, you’ll still be sprinting, jumping, and grinding along expansive lines that weave through the cityscape, all while leaving your mark with graffiti tags on the walls of this creatively designed metropolis.
Over the past year, Rec Room hasn’t produced as many first-party games as in previous years. Their last major release before ‘Run the Block’ was ‘My Little Monster,’ a charming pet farming simulator. However, Rec Room hasn’t just been resting on its laurels. They’ve been busy enhancing the platform with plenty of branded content, like avatar packs inspired by the ‘Monster High’ franchise and elements from Bungie’s Destiny, a well-known first-person shooter.
This year, a significant focus has been on expanding their creator suite, empowering users to craft not just intricate worlds but also sellable assets within the creator economy. Additionally, Rec Room introduced full-body avatars, offering players even more avenues for personalization.
These updates came on the heels of Rec Room’s debut on the Nintendo Switch in November, adding yet another platform to its extensive roster, which includes PC VR, all Quest devices, the original PSVR, iOS, Android, Pico, Xbox, and PlayStation. Whether you’re a console enthusiast or a mobile gamer, chances are, you can jump into Rec Room and partake in the fun.
