As I said yesterday, I spent a huge amount of time gaming this year. Trying to narrow it down to just one game of the year for the Nintendo Switch, along with some honorable mentions, was a real challenge. So, make sure you look through the full list of honorable mentions for lots of Nintendo Switch gems worth your attention!
Gimmick! 2
It’s been over three decades since Gimmick! made its debut on Nintendo’s Famicom, the Japanese counterpart to the NES, known for its challenging gameplay. If you’re worried about difficulty, fear not! As explained by Niklas Istenes, CEO and Founder of Bitwave Games, in our recent interview, Gimmick! 2 has been redesigned for wider accessibility, inviting more players to jump in and enjoy this nostalgic sequel.
The game centers around Yumetaro, who conjures up a star pivotal to the gameplay, emphasizing physics with its weight and momentum. Even on the original Famicom, this aspect was innovative, and now, it continues to be crucial in the sequel. The star allows players not only to combat foes and protect themselves but to solve puzzles and reach tricky locations by using it as a platform.
SCHiM
SCHiM is an inventive puzzle platformer where you leap from shadow to shadow. Each schim is the essence of an object or creature, and separation is never a good thing. In this game, you’re on a mission to reunite a schim with its human after they’ve been split apart. After getting a hang of the basics in the tutorial, which showcases your human’s life journey—from youthful innocence to adulthood woes—you’ll be shadow-hopping against the clock in search of this reunion.
Dungeons of Dreadrock 2: The Dead King’s Secret
This sequel kicks off with a captivating tune, immersing you into its narrative. Previously, you played as a sister looking for her lost brother. Now, you step into the shoes of a wizard trying to locate the Crown of Wisdom in the dangerous depths of Dreadrock Mountain. The story intertwines with the original game’s events, offering a fresh perspective and a holy quest to drive you forward.
Ynglet
Ynglet is a lively, psychedelic journey that begins after a meteor strikes the scene. As the world forms, you control a worm-like entity, maneuvering through an environment where the adaptive soundtrack flows with your every move. The hand-drawn visuals captivate, evolving as you uncover new gameplay facets like ethereal checkpoints and dynamic obstacles. The learning curve is steady, allowing you to acclimatize as you navigate this surreal space.
Peglin
Peglin fuses fantasy with Pachinko mechanics in a roguelite adventure on the Switch. You must retrieve your gold from greedy dragons, mastering each orb under your control. Starting with the versatile Peglin, unlock new classes through achievements and fight to stop the dragon menace. The strategic variety keeps gameplay fresh as you journey through this whimsical world.
Castaway
Bringing two concise adventure experiences to the Switch, Castaway pays tribute to Zelda classics. First, traverse The Island, reminiscent of Link’s Awakening, as you strive to rescue your kidnapped dog. After an intense crash landing, regain your gear and embark on this quick yet enthralling quest fueled by stunning pixel art and catchy tunes.
Lords of Exile
Inspired by NES classics like Castlevania, Lords of Exile offers a linear quest driven by vengeance. Play as Gabriel, exacting revenge after the antagonist’s heinous actions. Master eight levels of intense 2D action to reclaim peace. This homage to classic gaming delivers nostalgia with a contemporary twist.
Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island
In Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island, journey to a mythical land where Greek gods have lost their memories. As Alex, a modern backpacker, you explore a non-linear world, aiding gods with their lost mementos to rekindle their memories. Save your progress on the island’s benches and enjoy this charming narrative amidst a fantastical backdrop.
Iron Meat
A high-intensity run-and-gun experience echoing the 16-bit days, Iron Meat challenges you to thwart a rampant biomass known as The Meat. Play solo or with a friend as you traverse stages filled with mutants and challenges. Choose from three difficulty modes to tailor your battle experience and fend off this chaotic threat.
Echo Generation: Midnight Edition
Set in the mystical 90s, Echo Generation: Midnight Edition is a turn-based adventure where you orchestrate a group of kids unraveling eerie mysteries. Customize your protagonist, gather comics, and dive into a story woven tightly with nostalgia. Kick off your adventure in Maple Toen, exploring this dynamic setting filled with supernatural twists and youthful wonder.
