Xbox Game Pass is often hailed as a top choice for gaming subscriptions, but Sony’s online service, PS Plus, certainly holds its own. While the Essential tier offers monthly game offerings, those who opt for the Extra or Premium tiers gain access to the Games Catalog—a curated collection for both PS4 and PS5 players. Premium members are treated to the additional perk of the Classics Catalog, which includes a selection of PS1 and PS2 games at no additional cost. This strategic approach appears to be paying off, as Sony has experienced a boost in revenue from customers upgrading to these higher-tier services.
A look into Sony’s third-quarter financial report for the 2024 fiscal year reveals a 20% increase in revenue compared to the previous year. This boost is attributed to users opting for the more comprehensive PS Plus tiers like Extra and Premium.
“In terms of PlayStation Plus, quarterly revenues saw a 20% year-on-year growth in U.S. dollars, mainly due to increased average revenue per user (‘ARPU’),” the report explains, “This was driven primarily by a migration to higher service tiers and modifications in pricing.”
Sony has been enhancing its Games Catalog for Extra and Premium members with an impressive selection. During the recent State of Play event, Sony announced that the highly praised Star Wars Jedi: Survivor would join the service on February 18. In the same announcement, they introduced Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, a new narrative adventure game, also set to debut on the same day. For those enjoying the Classics Catalog, Patapon 3, a beloved PSP title, will finally be available to Premium subscribers.
