A studio hailing from Korea, Pixelity, has thrown the anime community into a buzz with its announcement that they’re crafting an XR game inspired by the legendary ’90s anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion. This classic has held fans captive since its 1995 debut.
Pixelity wrote in a recent blog post that they have secured an official licensing agreement with Japan’s Studio Khara to bring this XR game to life. The ambitious project will roll out in three segments, drawing its narrative from the anime’s original 26 episodes. The studio already has the gears turning on the first part, aiming for a release sometime in 2026.
For those of us who are longtime Evangelion aficionados (we proudly count ourselves among them), this news is thrilling yet familiar. Back in the ’90s, Neon Genesis Evangelion wasn’t just an anime; it was a revolution that invigorated Japan’s anime scene and left a lasting impact on numerous series that followed.
Set in the then-futuristic year of 2015, the series introduces us to Shinji Ikari, tasked with piloting the Evangelion—humanity’s towering hope against the enigmatic foes known as Angels that assault Tokyo-3.
While Pixelity has been tight-lipped about which platforms the game will land on, they promise an adventure where players will traverse various locales within an engaging XR setup. Expect to follow the anime’s timeline closely, tackle missions, and dive into intense battles.
What may entice long-time devotees further is the planned interactive element. The game will allow players to join forces with beloved Evangelion characters, according to the studio. Pixelity is determined to serve up the kind of vibrant action-adventure flair that genre fans have come to love.
Pixelity, which has been around since 2017, has already dipped its toes into VR with titles like Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). They’re also busy crafting two other VR entries: The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
This isn’t Evangelion’s first foray into VR; that credit goes to the 2017 release from Bandai Namco-driven Project i Can, which offered the four-player Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls at Tokyo’s VR ZONE. However, Pixelity’s version marks the first time fans can bring the iconic series directly into their homes, creating an entirely new avenue for experiencing this enduring anime classic.
