Showtime is making another bid to revitalize the beloved Dexter series with a fresh prequel installment titled Original Sin, and the first trailer has just been unveiled.
Though Dexter wrapped up over ten years ago, the modern trend of revamping popular titles ensures its continual resurgence. Following the 2022 sequel series, Dexter: New Blood, which picked up a decade post-original series, Showtime and Paramount have now introduced Dexter: Original Sin. Before diving in, please be aware that there are spoilers for New Blood tied intricately to this prequel—so proceed with caution if you haven’t caught up!
In the newly released trailer, we revisit poignant moments from the finale of New Blood, showcasing Dexter sprawled in the snow, bleeding after his son Harrison shoots him. As he’s treated at the hospital, his life flashes before him, launching us into the prequel saga. Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin tracks Dexter’s journey from a student to a revenge-seeking serial killer. The official synopsis elaborates: “As Dexter cannot suppress his bloodthirsty impulses any longer, he must learn to control his internal darkness.”
Guided by his father Harry, portrayed by Christian Slater, Dexter adopts a Code to eliminate those deemed unworthy, all while avoiding police suspicion. This adds pressure as Dexter starts a forensics internship at Miami Metro Police.
Michael C. Hall returns to lend his voice to Dexter through narration, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, famed for Buffy, makes a special appearance. Given the prequel nature, major shake-ups for Dexter seem unlikely, yet the journey promises to be thrilling.
This series might also shed light on Dexter’s fate post-New Blood, with a sequel named Resurrection on the horizon. Could the prequel culminate with Dexter awakening unscathed? Find out when the series debuts on December 13 on Paramount+.
