Nintendo recently shared that, as of September 30, 2024, their Nintendo Switch Online service boasts over 34 million subscribers. This update was part of a financial briefing led by Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, focusing on the company’s gaming platform business strategy.
This subscription count marks a slight drop from the 36 million subscribers recorded back in September 2022. Nintendo attributes this decrease to a slowdown in new game releases featuring online play. On a brighter note, the company reports a “steady increase” in subscriptions to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack since its debut in 2021.
To enhance the appeal of Nintendo Switch Online, the latest offering is Nintendo Music, a music streaming service exclusive to subscribers, available through a smartphone app.
When investors queried whether Nintendo Music might eventually reach those beyond the current subscriber base, Furukawa clarified:
“Nintendo Switch Online is fundamentally about enhancing the Nintendo Switch experience, and that goal remains unchanged. Nintendo Music allows our members to enjoy Nintendo game music on their smart devices. It’s a significant part of our content strategy, aiming to broaden access to Nintendo’s intellectual property. We launched this service to share game music with our audience in a uniquely Nintendo way.”
Furukawa added, “We hope that listening to Nintendo Music will evoke memories of playing our games, perhaps motivating players to revisit these games. Ideally, Nintendo Music will become one more reason for subscribers to continue their Nintendo Switch Online memberships.”
