When it comes to XCOM, fans are generally split into two groups: those who favor the modern iterations from Firaxis, and those who are nostalgic for the original X-COM titles by MicroProse from the ’90s. If you find yourself leaning towards the latter, Xenonauts 2 should definitely catch your attention, especially now with the substantial new update on the horizon.
In Xenonauts 2, you’ll step into the shoes of a multinational division tasked with thwarting an alien invasion. This strategy game immerses you in covert operations where you’ll lead ground missions to repel these extraterrestrial foes, while establishing bases worldwide to ensure a robust global defense. Set against the backdrop of an alternate 2009—where the Cold War never ended—the game’s political landscape adds another intriguing layer to its strategy.
Since its early launch on Steam’s Early Access in July 2023, Goldhawk Interactive has consistently brought improvements to the game. These updates have shaped it into a more refined and fulfilling experience. The latest update is a fantastic entry point for newcomers and a compelling reason for veterans to dive back in.
Milestone 5.8.0 introduces a chilling new challenge: Mind Control. Certain alien troops endowed with Psi-Strength can now seize control of one of your soldiers for an entire turn. The success of this power depends on proximity, as well as the Bravery and Morale of your units, making close encounters even more perilous.
Additionally, the game now assigns a protection level to your supporters, which can be normal, high, or low. These levels influence the recruitment or elimination costs. Strategic Operations receive small daily value increases if left unused, returning to baseline once utilized.
Diving deeper, the game presents various adjustments across strategy, air combat, and tactical play. Some story-driven scenes are revamped for clarity, and Phase 1 now extends into a third month featuring Destroyer UFOs.
Noteworthy changes include a tiered system for explosive damage, which ranges from full impact at close range to half at a distance. Also, Xenonaut aircraft now conserve fuel during aerial combat—a small but significant adjustment following player feedback.
For those eager to delve into all the new fixes and features, the full patch notes offer detailed insight. A heads-up if you’re picking the game back up: you’ll need to start a fresh campaign to enjoy these updates. Saves from version 5.7.0 won’t be compatible, but you can still revisit them by opting into the Experimental Legacy branch.
