Recent reports indicate that the French voice actors for Apex Legends have declined to sign a contract that would have potentially allowed their voices to be used for AI training purposes.
Pascale Chemin, known for voicing Wraith in the French version of the popular battle royale game, brought this issue to light on Twitter. She revealed that a publisher—likely Electronic Arts—had introduced a clause in their contracts that would permit their vocal performances to be used in developing AI models. Although specifics about the game and publisher weren’t confirmed, all arrows point towards Apex Legends and EA.
In a show of solidarity, 31 other voice actors involved with the project have also turned down the agreement, collectively drafting a letter of refusal to the publisher.
Chemin passionately expressed her concerns on social media, as translated by ResetEra: “If we don’t stand together now to ensure a protective clause is incorporated into our contracts—not just for us, but for every video game dubbing studio—we’ll miss our chance and face dire consequences.”
She continued, “Refusing work in today’s climate feels impractical; many of us are barely scraping by as job opportunities dwindle. While the need for a paycheck is real, we’re not just being offered work; we’re being asked to forfeit our expertise to train AI that might eventually take our place. It’s as if we’re being asked to undermine our own future. They want us to support something we’re fundamentally opposing.”
