During the early days of Realm Reborn and the Crystal Tower Alliance in Final Fantasy 14, The Cloud of Darkness was quite the formidable foe. But as time marched on and the MMORPG evolved, venturing into Crystal Tower became more of a grind than a thrill. Even though there’s still a level cap, gear doesn’t adjust properly for these older raids, and now that we’re in the Dawntrail era, they seem more like a chore. However, that’s all about to change. With the arrival of the new chaotic alliance raid in Final Fantasy 14, there’s a fresh 24-player challenge that breathes new life into The Cloud of Darkness, making it a force to reckon with once more. It’s time to set aside Diablo 4, pause Last Epoch, and put Path of Exile 2 on hold, because this is the challenge everyone will want to conquer.
When the 7.1 update for Final Fantasy 14 was first introduced, Naoki Yoshida, popularly known as ‘Yoshi-P,’ noted that the chaotic alliance raid turned out to be unexpectedly tougher than the creators initially planned. “We aimed for something extremely challenging,” Yoshi-P explained, “but developer Mr. Ozma admitted, ‘oopsie, it’s veered more towards savage than extreme.’” And thus, The Cloud of Darkness stages a comeback. If you’re not prepared to embrace Final Fantasy 14’s new 24-player setup, the chaotic alliance raid might just get the better of you.
Veering away from the standard alliance raid progression, this raid consists of a single battle, necessitating an eight-player raid team: two tanks, two healers, and four DPS members, organized into three separate groups. Tanks will have their hands full, managing enemy separations and switching roles when needing to take on aggro mid-battle. While an organized alliance party can attempt the raid with as few as 12 participants, it’s a challenge best saved for after you’ve conquered it with a full roster.
Rewards include two mounts, with one allowing you to morph into The Cloud of Darkness, along with level 730 gear, minions, and, if luck is on your side, tradeable reward tokens. There’s also a bonus for every member completing the chaotic alliance raid for the first time, offering a hefty 24 bonuses on your initial victory. Feeling adventurous? Dive right in, as the Final Fantasy 14 chaotic alliance raid is now live this Tuesday, December 24.
