Dead Space stands as a classic in the horror gaming genre, resonating deeply with its fanbase over the years. When EA rolled out a remake of the original, it reignited hope among enthusiasts for a new chapter in the series. Sadly, those hopes were dashed when EA rejected a proposal for Dead Space 4.
Earlier this year, Glen Schofield, Bret Robbins, and Christopher Stone, the masterminds behind the original Dead Space, revealed in a conversation with Dan Allen Gaming that they approached EA about continuing the franchise. Despite their enthusiasm, their proposal didn’t gain much traction, and EA turned it down fairly quickly.
Schofield explained, “We didn’t delve too deep. They simply replied, ‘No, we’re not interested at the moment, but thanks for reaching out,’ and that was that. We knew our contacts there and decided not to push further. We respected their decision—they have their metrics and priorities, after all.”
Stone added some insight, pointing to the broader context of the gaming world as a possible factor in EA’s decision. “The industry’s navigating some uncertain waters right now,” he remarked. “There’s significant caution around taking risks, so we have to accept that and maybe, just maybe, there’s a chance in the future. We’d all jump at the chance to work on it again.”
The Dead Space remake, which launched in January 2023, was a hit critically, scoring a robust 89 on Metacritic. Our own Jason Faulkner rated it a stellar 9 out of 10. Nonetheless, the remake didn’t quite meet EA’s sales expectations, which stalled any immediate plans for another sequel or a Dead Space 2 remake, both of which were rumored to be in development by Motive earlier this year. As it stands, despite the positive acclaim, future projects seem to be on hold.
