A year back, I dove into creating episodes of 3rd Party 64, focusing on the Army Men series that graced the Nintendo 64. Around that time, a delightful Christmas-themed commercial for Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes caught my attention, courtesy of The Video Game History Foundation.
This sparked an engaging conversation with Frank Cifaldi, the director at VGHF. He shared news of a collection they had recently acquired from Michael Mendheim, the creative mind behind the Sarge’s Heroes series. By the end of our chat, my inbox was brimming with documentation about the development of the Army Men series, expanding the reach of my project significantly. Late in the summer of 2024, Frank even invited me to an upcoming episode of The Video Game History Hour. This meant getting to sit down with both him and Mendheim to really delve into the games, offering even deeper insights.
The latest installment of 3rd Party 64 showcases clips from this fascinating interview, enriched by the research from the documents provided by VGHF. Truly, their impressive work was crucial in exploring these games at this level.
And that’s not all!
As I delved deeper, it became clear that the knowledge I was uncovering about Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes was too vast to fit into one video. So, we created a second video to feature what I believe are the nine most intriguing, previously unknown facts unearthed during this research. You can catch this additional content on The Video Game History Foundation’s YouTube channel.
