Game Rant is excited to offer an exclusive sneak peek at Overthrown, a delightfully cozy city builder with robust co-op capabilities and some intriguing spins on the genre. This charming game is slated to make its debut on PC and Xbox consoles in early December 2024.
Overthrown springs from the creative minds at indie developer Brimstone. Known for their previous works like the 2016 jousting spectacle, Lance A Lot, and the 2018 online shooter, Banzai Royale, Brimstone is poised to release their latest offering to eager gamers. Set to debut on Steam Early Access and as part of the Xbox Game Preview programs, the game is launching on December 5.
Just ahead of its launch, Maximum Entertainment has unveiled some fresh screenshots, which we are thrilled to share exclusively. These images not only highlight the vibrant art style but also reveal the game’s unique twist: unlike most city builders, Overthrown lets you experience the action from a third-person view. While this concept isn’t entirely new—think back to 2001’s Metropolismania by Natsume—it’s rare enough today to set Overthrown apart in a crowded field.
Moving beyond the bird’s-eye norm, Overthrown places players in the role of a queen with a can-do attitude. Players will find themselves cutting down trees, constructing key infrastructure, and defending their citizens from daring bandits and fearsome mutants. The game also incorporates classic action-adventure elements, with the queen zipping across water and battling foes with anime-like agility and style. After the battles, players will return to managing their cities, switching back to the classic top-down view if they prefer.
Brimstone intends to keep Overthrown in early access for roughly a year, eyeing a full release as soon as late 2025. During this period, they aim to gather player feedback to refine their city-building concept. The game’s initial version will feature single-player mode and support online co-op for up to six players. Overthrown’s evolving seasons bring distinct challenges, opportunities, and visual changes to keep the gameplay dynamic.
Come December 5, the early access version will be available on Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam. Additionally, it will be ready for game enthusiasts on Xbox Game Pass, fully accessible through PC Game Pass and the Ultimate tier of Microsoft’s subscription service. Due to Sony’s current policy against early access on PS Store, PlayStation users will miss this initial phase. Nevertheless, plans are in place for the game to make its way to the PS5 eventually.
In Overthrown, players lift and throw objects within this chaotic city builder, constructing and managing their kingdom in a perilous wilderness. The game offers a sandbox experience where you can strategically build your domain, leverage a powerful, ancient crown with magical abilities, and fend off threats like bandits and mutants. Growth leads to increased fame, drawing allies to your cause—and challenges from rivals, including those in your multiplayer co-op party.
Don’t like where something’s placed? Just pick it up and toss it elsewhere. Resource gathering becomes a playful endeavor with the unique abilities of a soul-stealing crown. Whether battling mutants with anime-style prowess or setting enemy factions against each other through clever manipulation of the terrain, Overthrown offers a fresh, immersive take on city-building for both solo and co-op play.
