In recent weeks, Animal Company, the free-to-play game available in early access on Quest, has been consistently topping the platform’s earnings charts, often challenging the long-standing favorite, Gorilla Tag. Its success doesn’t appear to be slowing down.
Animal Company has achieved a feat only reached by one other game: surpassing 100,000 user reviews on Quest. Gorilla Tag, developed by Another Axiom, was the first to hit this milestone last March, becoming the platform’s most successful game in terms of both reviews and revenue.
Wooster Games, the studio behind Animal Company, has combined the arm-based movement style of Gorilla Tag with the survival action of Lethal Company to create something players love. Just recently, Animal Company broke the 100K user reviews mark, nearly doubling its numbers in record time. The game had previously boasted 1 million monthly active users just last month.
To put things into perspective, Animal Company had over 60,000 user reviews about a month ago, while Gorilla Tag was slightly above 140,000. In a stunning surge, Animal Company soared past 108,000 reviews in this short period, outpacing Gorilla Tag, which only added around 6,000 new reviews in the same timeframe.
Data from VRDB, an independent data aggregator, highlights a significant uptick in reviews starting mid-March, showing the game’s growing appeal.
If Animal Company maintains its current growth pattern, it might just dethrone Gorilla Tag as the most popular game on Quest by user reviews. Though other vital metrics like daily and monthly active users still favor Gorilla Tag, Animal Company is catching up fast.
However, all these new players need to translate into revenue for the studio. Wooster hasn’t disclosed revenue figures since microtransactions went live last September, leaving us curious about how this popularity translates financially.
Last month, Wooster Games shared that the introduction of in-app purchases has placed them in a “strong and healthy position.” Since monetization began in September, their revenue has been steadily climbing, doubling since December. The player base is the true highlight, with Animal Company now boasting over 1 million monthly active users, four times more than in December.
This success comes as the Quest platform sees demographic changes, partly driven by the release of Quest 3S, Meta’s $300 mixed reality headset. Meta noted earlier this year that the increase in free-to-play content and a younger user base are boosting revenue from in-app purchases—seen in games like Animal Company and Gorilla Tag.
The big question now is whether Wooster Games can sustain this momentum, continuing to engage players while boosting revenue. We’re all eager for those revenue figures from Wooster, as they will reveal how Quest’s top-earning games stand. If it mirrors Gorilla Tag’s report from last June, the numbers might already be quite impressive.
