During Bungie’s recent Marathon stream, they unveiled early footage of their upcoming first-person extraction shooter, sparking quite a bit of skepticism across social media and Reddit. Some folks are already predicting that it might meet the same unfortunate end as Concord, the hero shooter Sony pulled offline barely a month after its debut. In light of this, a former Concord developer took to the Marathon subreddit, urging people to keep an open mind.
“Concord just didn’t manage to capture the players’ imaginations, and we got the message loud and clear,” shared the developer, posting under the pseudonym MrSpug on Reddit. “Witnessing our project fail and become the butt of online jokes was truly disheartening.”
This developer, who had been part of Firewalk Studios until Sony closed it down following the game’s removal, expressed their solidarity with Bungie’s developers. They acknowledged the considerable effort poured into creating Marathon and praised them for daring to venture into a highly competitive genre.
“I gave it my all on Concord,” they admitted. “We came up short, but don’t let our missteps affect others.”
Although Concord and Marathon are different in their gameplay, both are products of Sony’s publishing efforts. One major point of contention from the Marathon stream was Bungie’s choice to not adopt a free-to-play model. Similarly to Concord, Marathon will be priced lower than most new releases. Bungie has indicated it’ll be somewhat under the cost of a “full-priced” game, suggesting a price near $40 upon its release in September. However, the mere presence of a price tag has left some wondering if it’ll face a similar destiny as Concord.
“I really wasn’t eager to be seen as ‘that’ developer, drawing attention to myself as if I’m personally invested,” the former Concord developer explained in a follow-up to their post. “But deeming this game a failure before it’s even out there is just baffling to me.”
