There’s some buzz in the gaming world as Ubisoft, the well-known French publisher, gears up to take on a project that could potentially rival Apex Legends in the battle royale genre.
According to Insider Gaming, Ubisoft’s latest endeavor, intriguingly codenamed Scout, might just be the contender Apex Legends fans didn’t see coming. It seems the art style of this new title initially bore such a striking resemblance to that of Apex Legends, that it could be mistaken for a thumbnail of Respawn and EA’s popular game. More whispers in the grapevine suggest that Scout even features characters that echo those found in Apex. This project has quietly been in the pipeline for a while now.
So why is Ubisoft diving into this project? The company appears to be eyeing an opportunity to attract players away from Apex Legends, a game that, by EA’s own admission, is experiencing a bit of a slowdown in financial performance.
A source close to the situation noted, “The aim seems to be to tap into the dropping player numbers of Apex, with Ubisoft higher-ups sensing a gap for another hero-styled battle royale in the market.”
Ubisoft is no stranger to the free-to-play battle royale scene. They made an attempt with Hyperscape back in 2020, although it didn’t have a long life, concluding just 18 months after its launch. Recently, they’ve also pulled the plug on their free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, which will end in 2024.
Meanwhile, fans of Apex Legends can look forward to its own evolution, with a version 2.0 in development and scheduled to be released sometime post-April 2026.
