nDreams, well-known for their free-to-play arena shooter FRENZIES, has announced that the game is set to move out of early access by the end of this year. However, fans of the game may be disappointed to know that it won’t be launching on PSVR 2 as originally planned.
The development team has issued a statement sharing some updates and teasing what’s next for their PS VR2 endeavors in lieu of FRENZIES making its way there:
“We’re thrilled to announce that FRENZIES will remain free-to-play once it exits Early Access later this year! Since it first launched in Early Access on Meta Quest, the community’s response has been overwhelmingly positive regarding the unique chaotic gameplay FRENZIES offers. Our goal is to build on this momentum as we move forward.
In striving to deliver the best experience we can, we’ve made the tough call to focus entirely on polishing the Meta Quest version and thus won’t be releasing FRENZIES on PS VR2. We understand that this might disappoint those eagerly anticipating the PS VR2 release, but exciting announcements specific to PS VR2 are on the horizon, so stay tuned!
In the coming weeks, look out for more updates as we unveil our Early Access roadmap.”
Initially released for Quest 2 and higher last October, Frenzies offers a fast-paced shooting experience with a variety of weapons and modes, all bundled into a robust, VR-native platform that players have come to enjoy.
For PSVR 2 users who were keen to dive into FRENZIES, this might feel like a setback. A closer look, though, reveals that the developer’s pivot seems logical. Over the past year, the Quest platform has gained a noticeable uptick in its younger user base, especially with the release of the affordable $300 Quest 3S, which has also spurred on a surge of free-to-play content compatible with it.
As Meta’s VP of Metaverse Content Samantha Ryan said back in February, “We anticipate free-to-play (F2P) to become a widely sustainable strategy for developers, who have so far leaned heavily on premium apps. However, we foresee F2P coexisting rather than replacing premium content.”
Moreover, given the increasingly challenging economic landscape, nDreams seems to be strategically aligning itself with its biggest potential audience to ensure maximum return on their efforts. The studio, based in the UK, recently streamlined its operations by merging nDreams Studio Orbital with nDreams Studio into a new internal entity known as ‘Compass’ following some workforce reductions.
Despite these changes, nDreams continues to be a powerhouse in the XR gaming world, having rolled out a slew of top-tier VR titles like Vendetta Forever, Power Wash Simulator VR, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, Synapse, Fracked, Little Cities, and Phantom: Covert Ops, demonstrating their knack for producing a diverse range of engaging VR experiences.
