Nintendo has announced a shift in plans regarding the pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the United States. Originally slated for April 9, these pre-orders are now on hold as the company is being cautious about economic shifts and their potential impact on the market.
In an official statement shared with the press, Nintendo explained, “Due to the potential impact of tariffs and changing market conditions, pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not begin on April 9, 2025. We will provide an update on the timing at a later date. However, the launch date itself remains June 5, 2025.”
The delay comes on the heels of a significant announcement from U.S. President Donald Trump on April 2, introducing a wide array of tariffs affecting numerous countries, including Japan and Vietnam. Nintendo, headquartered in Japan, carries out much of its manufacturing in China and, more crucially, Vietnam. The latter became a manufacturing hub for Nintendo hardware as part of a strategic move to anticipate potential U.S. tariffs on China. Now, Vietnam faces a hefty 46% tariff, while China is dealing with an additional 34% tariff on top of existing duties. These baseline tariffs are bound to affect the import costs for the Nintendo Switch 2.
These developments occur amidst global economic uncertainty. JP Morgan recently raised the U.S. recession risk to 60%, a factor likely to influence consumer spending. The tariff announcement has sent ripples through economies worldwide, disrupting trade and altering projected growth.
For American gamers, this situation might mean a more expensive Nintendo Switch 2 than expected. It’s unfortunate news, especially when many are feeling the financial squeeze due to rising living costs. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a bit longer to understand the full impact on U.S. consumers.
