With the PlayStation 5 now taking the lead as the main console for gamers in the PlayStation family, the PS4 is gradually seeing less support. This shift means that popular games, including certain MMORPGs, are winding down their support for older systems. A notable game in this category is allowing players to transition to the latest generation at no extra cost.
Black Desert Online, the well-loved MMORPG, is set to end its run on the PS4 and Xbox One. Developer Pearl Abyss recently confirmed the closure of these versions, giving players a few months to enjoy the game on older consoles. This shutdown is scheduled to occur during maintenance on June 26. Fortunately for fans, there is a silver lining: they can upgrade to the latest version without any charge, and all account information and previous purchases will seamlessly carry over.
As Black Desert Console Live Service Manager Brian Choi assured players, “Your game data will remain secure,” ensuring a smooth transition from PS4 to PS5. “When you’re ready to make the switch to PlayStation 5 or the Xbox Series version, all your account details and entitlements for Black Desert will be there,” he explained. Recognizing the disappointment this news might bring to some, Choi emphasized the continuous updates aimed at enhancing the experience for players.
However, as he pointed out in a previous announcement, despite their best efforts to keep supporting older consoles, hardware constraints have increasingly hindered the delivery of new content. “After much consideration, we’ve decided that our focus should shift to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions. This will allow us to offer an improved and more reliable gaming service,” Choi added.
Black Desert Online first arrived in the U.S. back in 2016 and received a range of feedback. According to Metacritic, a site that compiles reviews, the game managed to score an average of 73 based on 35 critic reviews. It later made its way to both the PS4 and Xbox One in 2019.
