Soon, owners of Copilot+ PCs can look forward to a significant enhancement addressing one of Windows 11’s major drawbacks. In the latest Windows 11 Insider build, Microsoft is rolling out an improved Windows Search feature. This upgrade utilizes both artificial intelligence and specialized hardware to make locating documents, photos, and settings a breeze.
For now, these improvements to Windows Search are exclusive to Copilot+ PCs that run on Snapdragon processors. However, Microsoft assures us that a test version will be available "soon" for AMD and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs.
It’s a bit disappointing that this enhanced search functionality is limited to Snapdragon PCs. Some of the top-rated Copilot+ machines are equipped with Intel or AMD, and those users are still waiting for their turn.
The announcement of enhanced Windows Search first came out last October. This feature allows users to employ descriptive language within the Windows Search pane, making finding content or settings much easier.
The updated search system uses the NPUs found in all Copilot+ PCs. These processors boast at least 40 TOPS, ensuring they can handle AI functionalities effectively.
Since the debut of Copilot+ PCs last June, we’ve been waiting for a truly standout feature exclusive to this platform. Our Senior Editor, Zac Bowden, even described the launch of Copilot+ PCs as a "total disaster."
This rocky start is attributed to several issues, one of which was the absence of killer features.
The arrival of exclusive features that users find genuinely useful could potentially shift the Copilot+ PC landscape. Windows Search has been criticized by many, and bolstering it with AI might alleviate some of the frustrations associated with the tool.
In the release notes for the latest build, Microsoft details how artificial intelligence will aid in searching for content through both Windows Search and File Explorer.
Windows 11 Build 26100.3624: Features & Improvements
Enhanced Windows Search
Great news! Copilot+ PCs are getting a more intuitive Windows Search experience, thanks to semantic indexing models alongside traditional methods. Whether you’re using File Explorer, taskbar search, or even changing settings, you can just type in what’s on your mind to find what you need on your Copilot+ PC. Forget about remembering exact file names or the precise content inside a file. Want to change your theme? Just say it in settings. The 40+ TOPS NPU in Copilot+ PCs makes these improvements accessible even offline. Check out more on semantic search for Copilot+ PCs. Currently, only Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs benefit from these features, but support for AMD and Intel PCs is on the horizon.
Another exciting addition! Locating your cloud-stored photos is becoming easier on Copilot+ PCs. Use natural language in the File Explorer search box to find images. Results will include both local and cloud photos, ensuring you don’t miss anything. Try this with your personal OneDrive account today when you’re online. More details on semantic search are available for Copilot+ PCs, although Snapdragon is leading here too, with AMD and Intel support coming soon.
When will improved Windows Search be available for Windows 11?
The updated Windows Search is currently being tested by Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel, but only on Copilot+ PCs with Qualcomm chips. Although testing is underway, plans are always subject to change.
Microsoft initially mentioned last November that "improved Windows Search will be available through the Windows Insider Program in early 2025." There’s no confirmed date for a broader launch yet.
Typically, features in the Release Preview Channel appear for general use within 4-6 weeks, though this can vary. A specific release date for the improved Windows Search hasn’t been set, but it should emerge shortly.
Looking ahead, Microsoft will host a consumer-focused AI event on April 4, 2025, to celebrate its 50th anniversary. This could be the perfect occasion to unveil new AI features like the enhanced Windows Search.
