Ever since Bloober Team amazed us with their masterful remake of Silent Hill 2, I’ve found myself more inclined to trust them with their unique take on horror games. It’s hard not to be excited about their upcoming project, Cronos: The New Dawn, especially since it seems to channel the chilling essence of Dead Space with its stunning visuals and gruesome atmosphere.
In a recent behind-the-scenes glimpse, co-directors Wojciech Piejko and Jacek Zięba have boldly laid out the inspirations for their sci-fi survival horror venture. They cite iconic influences such as John Carpenter’s The Thing, the German TV sensation Dark, and Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys, along with the heart-pounding intensity of games like Dead Space and Dark Souls. Fans of Dead Space might notice some familiar elements in Cronos: eerie human mutations, an over-the-shoulder camera view for shooting, and a limb-severing mechanic. However, Piejko insists that Bloober Team is introducing their own twist on dismemberment to set it apart from Visceral Games’ approach.
Building on the anticipation from last October’s cinematic reveal trailer, Piejko and Zięba recently unveiled gameplay in a developer diary released on Thursday. They dive into the narrative, introducing us to the protagonist, the Traveller. Describing the Traveller as akin to a deep-sea diver exploring the vast temporal seas, they explain that the character is tasked with venturing into the remnants of human civilization to rescue survivors. The once-familiar world of Cronos has been transformed by a catastrophic event known as the Change, which obliterated our reality in the 1980s.
Both Piejko and Zięba have previously honed their craft on Bloober Team’s Observer and The Medium, bringing a wealth of expertise in sci-fi and psychological horror to their new project. Cronos: The New Dawn represents a fresh, original undertaking for Bloober, who are also collaborating on a new project with Konami.
