The tactical mil-sim shooter, Onward, from the Meta-owned studio Downpour Interactive, is gearing up for its highly anticipated 2.0 update soon. It feels like we’ve been waiting an eternity for this, especially considering the game’s last major refresh hit our screens nearly a year ago.
Rest assured, Onward hasn’t fallen into neglect. Over the past year, since the studio unveiled its significant ‘Mercenary’ update with the addition of a PVE mode and some graphic upgrades in February 2024, updates have been somewhat light. However, Downpour Interactive is now ready to drop the 2.0 update, which Meta has described in a recent blog post as “its biggest update ever,” packed with a wealth of new content.
Players can look forward to what Meta is calling “a massive graphical overhaul” that touches on weapons and utilities. But that’s not all—there’s also a fresh Operator system featuring 20 new characters, along with new map content to explore. You won’t have to wait too long for more details, as information about the 2.0 update is promised to be released “very soon.”
This comes at a tumultuous time for the gaming industry, marked by significant layoffs at Downpour Interactive back in 2023. Adding to the shakeup, founder and CEO, Dante Buckley, who established the studio in 2015, made his exit a month before the layoffs.
Onward originally stepped onto the scene with Early Access on Steam in 2016, making its way to the Oculus Quest in 2020. It continues to captivate players with its commitment to realism in its squad-based gameplay and meticulously crafted reproductions of real-world firearms.
For those looking to delve into Onward, you can find more information on the Horizon Store page for Quest 2 and above, and on Steam for PC VR headsets, where it usually retails for around $25.
