Sony Interactive Entertainment has responded to this weekend’s significant PSN outage by offering a bit of a consolation prize, although there is a stipulation. If you’re already a PS Plus member, you’re in luck: you’ll receive a five-day membership extension. For everyone else, unfortunately, it’s just an apology.
It’s worth noting that the recent PSN outage, stretching nearly a full day, marks the most prolonged network downtime since the notorious hack of 2011 when services were offline for nearly a month. Back then, as you might recall, Sony compensated all players with free games.
This time around, however, the compensation is exclusively for PS Plus members. Those who aren’t subscribed but missed out on playing popular free-to-play titles like Fortnite or Call of Duty: Warzone just before Super Bowl Sunday will have to make do with assurance that their data wasn’t compromised.
Sony took to social media to address the situation, explaining the issue as “operational” in nature. This seems to suggest that there wasn’t a security breach, and user data is secure. Nevertheless, it’s always wise to err on the side of caution. We recommend updating your passwords and checking the payment methods linked to your accounts.
We’ll be sure to keep you updated if any new information surfaces about the PSN outage. Regarding the PS Plus time extension, the best part is you don’t need to do anything—it’s automatically applied to your account.
Sony officially communicated through their Twitter account, stating, “Network services have fully recovered from an operational issue. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank the community for their patience. All PlayStation Plus members will automatically receive an additional 5 days of service.”
