When news broke about a live-action adaptation of Until Dawn, unveiled early last year, many fans responded with a mix of excitement and concern. The original 2015 game already boasted Hollywood talent, and much of its allure was rooted in the player’s ability to influence the story’s outcome. So naturally, people wondered, how could a movie decide on the game’s best storyline? It turns out, that’s not something we need to worry about, as the movie will introduce a whole new plot with an entirely different set of characters.
This revelation was shared during Sony’s presentation at the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show. Peter Stormare, the lone returning actor from the original game, appeared in a video announcement. Stormare reprises his role as Dr. Alan J. Hill, a psychologist who served as the game’s narrative guide, usually appearing in intriguing first-person interview scenes.
According to Stormare, just because the movie features a fresh storyline doesn’t mean that longtime fans should be concerned. The film intends to capture the game’s essence, continuing to honor the horror genre just as the original did.
This is probably the ideal route to take. Until Dawn’s 2015 success enabled Supermassive Games to create a series of similar horror games with unique narratives, so it makes sense for the movie to start anew as well.
We’re left wondering though, will capturing the spirit of the game involve elements of choice or randomness in the movie itself? While a fully-interactive movie experience might be far-fetched, there’s a chance the creative team—helmed by director David F. Sandberg (known for Annabelle: Creation) and writer Gary Dauberman (of It fame)—could introduce multiple endings or versions, depending on where you see it. This idea isn’t unheard of; Sony Pictures pulled off something similar not too long ago with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, albeit with minor tweaks.
Whatever direction the film takes, we won’t be in suspense for too long. Until Dawn hits theaters on April 25, featuring a talented cast including Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Soon, Odessa A’zion, Maia Mitchell, and Belmont Cameli.
