Marvel Rivals, much like most live-service games today, kicked off with a seasonal battle pass system. For players, this means diving into missions and spending currency to snag unique cosmetics, with each season bringing fresh sets of items to collect. Yet, there seems to be a bit of a snag with how players progress through this battle pass.
Right now, the path to advancing through Marvel Rivals’ battle pass tiers involves completing daily and weekly challenges. While these tasks are generally straightforward, a significant number must be completed before earning enough to buy a single tier. Even though the battle passes aren’t restricted by time, the pace feels somewhat sluggish. For NetEase Games to maintain interest in Marvel Rivals, they might need to consider major updates in upcoming patches.
At present, aside from a handful of story challenges that gift players Chrono Tokens and some other rewards, the battle pass progression heavily relies on these regular challenges. Players use these tokens to purchase battle pass items, with each one priced between 200 and 400 tokens, achievable only through mission completions.
This method makes the battle pass grind feel tediously slow at moments. Games like Fortnite not only use daily quests but also allow players to advance by playing and earning XP, which translates to progress through battle pass tiers. While daily tasks do help accelerate advancement, providing players with multiple paths to earn tiers would make the system far more accessible. Here’s hoping NetEase takes inspiration from such systems.
What’s interesting is that Marvel Rivals also features a leveling system, but leveling up doesn’t offer any tangible rewards. The only current link to the regular XP system is the competitive mode, which unlocks at level 10. Beyond this, leveling appears to be just a number for players to show off on their profiles.
Given that Marvel Rivals already has this leveling system in place, NetEase wouldn’t need a drastic overhaul to integrate it more with the battle pass system. Keeping daily and weekly challenges as the main way to earn Chrono Tokens is fine, but adding token rewards for leveling up would give players more flexibility in accruing battle pass items. This could also encourage longer, more dedicated play sessions.
The Marvel Rivals community is greatly enjoying the hero shooter, but many have voiced concerns over how battle pass tiers are currently rewarded. As of now, NetEase hasn’t indicated any plans for change. However, if they aim to retain and grow their player base, they might want to rethink this. While the current battle pass system isn’t game-breaking, offering more ways to earn tiers would be a big win for players.
