New Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Trailer Hints at a Pokemon Crossover, Sparking Imaginative Speculation

Paramount Pictures and Sega have surprised us with a brand new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and it includes an unexpected nod to Pokémon. It’s been a couple of months since we got a glimpse of the first trailer, and with the film’s release just around the corner, fans have been on the edge of their seats waiting for more. Today, the wait ended. The newly released trailer doesn’t disappoint. One of the standout moments? A kid asking if Tails is Detective Pikachu! Now, they can totally do that — talk about catching someone off guard in the best way possible. It also got me wondering what a crossover between those two franchises would even look like.

Imagine Sonic characters duking it out with Pokémon. I doubt Sonic would choose Shaymin just because they both share hedgehog status. Jolteon seems more fitting for the speedy blue hedgehog vibe — it’s the sixth fastest Pokémon, after all, and totally matches Sonic’s coolness factor. Or maybe we’ll get a twist with “Knuckles as a Pokémon.” Who knows? What we’re certain of is that this fun trailer gives us more peeks into the Chao-themed restaurant that Team Sonic visits. Honestly, that’s arguably one of the highlights. But be prepared for an emotional punch, too, with a sad match cut between Shadow and Maria. For those of us who don’t mind shedding a tear over Sonic characters (I admit I’m guilty), there’s something touching there, too.

Beyond the trailer itself, there’s plenty to look forward to in the full movie. Director Jeff Fowler has hinted at introducing new characters that might appear in future installments. While he hasn’t confirmed any names, my bets are on Big the Cat making an appearance. Mark your calendars — Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hits theaters on December 20. It’s coming up fast, and I, for one, can hardly wait!
