Everyone’s pretty familiar with the less-than-stellar reputation of Sony’s Spider-Man-less Spider-Verse. But the director of Kraven the Hunter thinks it’s worth giving his film a chance.
Let’s take a look at Venom, Morbius, and Madame Web for a moment. These flicks share three things: they’re associated with Spider-Man, they’re products of Sony, and, let’s be honest, they’re a bit of a mixed bag. Now, Venom has its charm if you ask me, but in the grand scheme, they’re not the best. This fact isn’t lost on J.C. Chandor, the director of the upcoming Kraven the Hunter, another movie about a Spider-Man foe that’s missing the web-slinger himself. In an interview with ComicBook, Chandor took a moment to acknowledge the lukewarm reception of previous films while still encouraging fans to give his movie a shot.
“I don’t want to dive too deep into the details, but here’s my perspective: as a filmmaker, my top priority, especially over the past few years, is to address the concerns some fans have expressed regarding decisions within Sony’s Spider-Man Universe,” Chandor explained.
“Some of the films have turned out to be huge hits, while others, not so much. So, it’s been hit-or-miss. We’re hoping people will give us a shot and come out to support this film, letting go of any baggage from past missteps. Give our movie a try.” I’d argue he’s being a tad optimistic about the success rate. Out of five live-action Sony Spider-Verse films, three have been successful, but let’s remember, those were all Venom films, featuring a more beloved character compared to Morbius or Madame Web. So, calling it a mixed success might be a bit of a stretch, don’t you think?
Chandor continued, saying he believes that fans will “see that we’ve done everything we can to craft an entertaining story. Once the movie wraps up, there’s room for plenty of possibilities. But my mission was to keep our film self-contained, protect its integrity, and simply tell a great story. Then we can explore various fun paths.”
And what might those fun paths entail? Well, that’s anyone’s guess at this point. But they’re likely contingent on the film’s success, so we’ll have to sit back and see how it all unfolds.
Kraven the Hunter is set to hit theaters soon on December 13.
