Matt Forbeck, known for his New York Times bestselling works and as the lead designer of the Marvel Multiverse RPG, has teamed up with his son Marty to launch an exciting new tabletop adventure set in the wildly popular Minecraft universe. You can now pre-order “Minecraft: Roll for Adventure: The Temple of the Charged Creeper.” This game aims to merge the broad appeal of Minecraft’s online crafting world with user-friendly role-playing rules.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the launch, Penguin Random House, the publisher, hasn’t disclosed many specifics about the game mechanics—a typical move when it comes to pre-orders for large IP-based tabletop games. The gamebook’s cover shows two six-sided dice, and according to the publisher’s listing, it includes “four dice.” Along with the dice, you’ll find a removable character sheet and a rules reference to guide you as you track your legendary journey, whether you’re playing solo or leading as a game master, referred to here as “your narrator.”
The plot unfolds in a secluded village that’s been overrun by “illagers,” the villainous mobs from Minecraft lore. Fans of Matt Forbeck might remember them as the main adversaries in his 2020 novel, “Minecraft Dungeons: The Rise of the Arch-Illager.” Much like a classic Dungeons & Dragons mission, you’ve got to step up to help this besieged village by locating and dismantling the threat, housed in the Temple of the Charged Creeper.
While past collaborations have seen Minecraft mixing with Dungeons & Dragons, like the Lightning Keep adventure designed for younger players, this particular endeavor is a wholly independent creation by the Forbecks. Given Matt Forbeck’s extensive background in designing tabletop games and writing novels for franchises like D&D, Minecraft, Halo, and Life is Strange—along with his original works—it’s no surprise there’s a lot of anticipation despite the lack of detail on the game’s page. Whether it captivates both Minecraft aficionados and tabletop enthusiasts will become evident when the book is released in July 2025.
