After more than three decades of dedication to Sony, the beloved Shuhei Yoshida, often just called Shu by fans and peers alike, is set to leave the company. This announcement, though understandable, took everyone by surprise and came about in an unusual manner—during an interview with the PlayStation Blog.

In the interview, Yoshida reflected on his remarkable journey with Sony, where he contributed to the success of numerous best-selling video games through various roles, ultimately becoming a fan favorite while leading PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios.
“I have an announcement to make,” Yoshida said during the conversation. “I’m leaving Sony Interactive Entertainment on January 15, 2025… it’s like announcing the launch date of a new game, [something] I haven’t done for a long time,” he added with a chuckle.
Yoshida shared that the idea of stepping away had been on his mind ever since he celebrated his 30-year milestone with the company. He believes it’s time for the next generation of talent to take on leadership positions.
On Twitter, Yoshida mentioned, albeit hinting more than detailing, that while he’s moving on from PlayStation, he isn’t planning to exit the gaming industry altogether. Yet, he kept any future plans to himself.
In a heartfelt comment, Yoshida expressed his confidence in the team he’s leaving behind: “PlayStation is in really good hands,” he remarked, “I thought, okay, this is my time.”
The team at PlayStation LifeStyle has had the privilege to interact with Yoshida on many occasions, and it’s been nothing but a pleasure. We’re certainly going to miss Shu and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
