Valve isn’t hastening to launch a direct sequel to their popular Steam Deck, but that doesn’t mean exciting developments aren’t on the horizon. They’ve announced a fresh twist on their best handheld gaming system: the Steam Deck OLED in a sleek, limited edition white.
Known as the “Steam Deck OLED: Limited Edition White,” this version boasts the identical specs as the current 1TB model. However, it comes with a $30 increase in price, retailing at $679. Mark your calendars because it’s hitting the shelves next week, specifically on Monday, November 18.
This new edition doesn’t just stand out in color; it also comes with a white carrying case and a microfiber cleaning cloth to keep your gear pristine. Valve has been known to play with different looks, launching previous models like the smoky translucent shell, which sold out rapidly but had some issues with minor cracks. Fortunately, the new white version will be rolled out in all regions where the Steam Deck is available. This includes the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Europe, Australia, as well as parts of Asia including Japan and South Korea through their partner, Komodo. Distribution will be balanced, ensuring each region gets a fair share of the stock.
Aware of the ever-present scalpers, Valve is curbing potential resellers by limiting purchases to one white Steam Deck per account. Additionally, any buying account must have made at least one transaction before November 2024.
Reflecting on the new edition, Valve expressed this release as a trial to gauge consumer response, which will shape the future direction of color variants: “We’re curious to see what the response is and will use what we learn to inform future decisions about any potential new color variants down the line.”
Of course, if you’re keen on customization but don’t want to await future Valve releases, companies like Jsaux and dbrand offer alternative backplates or skins. Yet, for those preferring an official version, this limited white Steam Deck variant is up for grabs until quantities last.
Valve is also hinting at future endeavors, mentioning that beyond the introduction of new color options and ongoing software updates, they are continually working on the future of Steam Deck and other hardware innovations.
From the released images, there’s a definite vibe reminiscent of the classic Wii U, merged with the sleekness of an iPod—a combo that feels refreshingly modern. It’ll be intriguing to see if this new colorway tempts current Steam Deck owners to invest in a new kit.
