In a recent update reported by Engadget, the independent gaming platform itch.io is gearing up for another Creator Day on November 29. What makes this day special is that any purchases made will send 100% of the proceeds directly to the developers, as itch.io has decided to waive its usual 10% fee.
Falling right within the timeframe of itch.io’s annual Autumn Sale, running from November 27 to December 5, this Creator Day is perfectly timed. During this sale, the platform’s extensive community of developers has contributed over 7,400 projects. These projects encompass a diverse range of offerings, including both digital and physical games, along with various assets for budding game creators.
Itch.io introduced Creator Day back in 2021, as a way to support developers during the financially tough times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Spencer Hayes, the director of business and content at itch.io, explained to Polygon the motivation behind this initiative: “We’re supported by our awesome community every day and we wanted to set a day where we could return the favor. It’s been hard out there for a lot of folks, and we figured we’d help out how we can.”
Itch.io already stands out with its favorable revenue-sharing model, where only 10% of sales are usually taken by the store. This is significantly more developer-friendly than platforms like Steam, the PlayStation Store, the Microsoft Store, and Apple’s App Store. Events like Creator Day, along with various charity efforts hosted on the site, further distinguish itch.io from its more widely known competitors.
